Long Eaton Man Forced to Mow Lawn Three Times a Week After Fertiliser Mishap

A man from Long Eaton, Derbyshire, says he’s become a “prisoner in his own garden” after accidentally spilling lawn fertiliser, which has caused his grass to grow at what he describes as “demonic speed.”

David Pritchard, 47, said he dropped half a bag of high-strength fertiliser while topping up his spreader, and within days, he noticed his garden had become a lush green jungle

I cut it on Monday, and by Wednesday, it was back up to my ankles,” Pritchard told reporters. “By Friday, I could barely see the dog.

Neighbours have started to complain about the constant drone of his mower, with one describing it as “like living next to Silverstone.”

Experts have warned Pritchard that the rapid growth could continue for weeks. Dr. Elaine Marsh, a horticulturalist, explained:

When fertiliser is applied in excessive amounts, it supercharges the nitrogen cycle. In this case, the lawn is essentially on steroids. If he’s not careful, it could spread into the street.

Local children have apparently taken to calling his garden “The Amazon” and one was overheard asking if there were monkeys living in the trees.

Pritchard, however, is less amused. “I’m out there with the Flymo more than I’m in my own bed. If it carries on, I’ll have to get shifts sorted with the wife.

Erewash Borough Council confirmed that they are “monitoring the situation closely,” and have reassured residents that there are no immediate plans to designate the property as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
